THE HERALD has teamed up with a generous Devon business to award £4,000 to young sports stars and clubs in the Plymouth region.
Newton Abbot Firewatch awarded 15 individuals and groups at least £200 each, to be spent on improving young people's chances in a range of sports.
The fire protection company's managing director, Martin Smith, and The Herald editor Bill Martin presented the cheques to the lucky youngsters, who ranged from football teams and sailors to budding martial art champions and mountain boarders.
Mr Smith said: “I wanted to do something for youngsters as they are the future of sport – hopefully this will go some way to helping them, and maybe even encourage a few other businesses to do a similar thing.”
One of the recipients was 15 year-old basketball star Tom Riley – already in the England Under 16 squad.
